The Hankin family built, developed and managed the George Washington Motor Lodge chain which, prior to its merger with Days Inn, was one of the first lodging chains established in the nation. Two of the earliest motels were originally Howard Johnson's lodges.

The Hankin family also owned and managed Willow Grove Park - in its time one of the largest amusement parks in the country - and the Willow Grove Park Bowling Lanes - prior to its closing the largest facility of its type in the world. Both of these were developed into the Willow Grove Park Mall.

The Hankin family has also developed numerous industrial centers, office parks and residential communities in the metropolitan Philadelphia area.

The Hankin family founded the Bank of King of Prussia which became the Royal Bank of Pennsylvania, and the Bank and Trust Company of Old York Road which had 13 branches in the Philadelphia area. This bank merged in 1996 with Midlantic Bank and then with PNC Bank.
